Summary
The Global Leprosy Mapping (GLM) Project is
designed to modernize leprosy data systems in Nepal and strengthen evidence for
targeted interventions. Reliable, case-based data and geospatial analysis are
essential to support Nepal’s progress towards zero leprosy and
to align with global leprosy targets.
In Nepal, the project is being piloted in Madhesh
Province, covering all 8 districts and 136 municipalities. It
is being implemented in close collaboration with the Ministry of Health
and Population (MoHP) and aims to transform how leprosy information is
collected, validated, and used for decision-making.
What GLM Involves
- Assessing
the current leprosy data management system and setting priorities for
improvement. - Digitizing case-based
reporting of both retrospective and prospective leprosy cases. - Collecting geospatial
data of all registered cases using mobile devices. - Training
health workers in case-based data collection and digital tools. - Developing
interactive dashboards, maps, and tools for monitoring and planning.
Objectives
- Establish
an electronic case-based reporting system for leprosy. - Ensure accurate
entry of all retrospective and prospective data. - Collect
and use geospatial data for program planning. - Strengthen
the capacity of health workers to manage and analyze
data. - Create regular
maps of priority areas to guide interventions.
Expected Outcomes
- A modern,
digitized leprosy data system integrated with national reporting. - Improved
accuracy and efficiency in tracking and managing cases. - Geospatial
intelligence to identify hotspots and guide resource allocation. - Evidence
and tools that facilitate advocacy, fundraising, and policy-making. - A
scalable model to extend to other provinces beyond
Madhesh.
